Musée Jacquemart-André is a public museum which houses the art collection of Edouard André and Nélie Jacquemart. Edouard André was the last scion of a wealthy family in the century who married a famous portray artist, Nelie Jacquemart. André spent his life being an army who was stationed abroad before he met Jaquemart and Jaquemart was a busy specializing in aristocracy and government figures.
As you can see, those husband and wife were where the museum got its name. The museum is also hosted in their former house and located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and housing 18th century French paintings and furniture, 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, and Italian renaissance works. This specific dedication to the couple makes this museum to be one of its kinds in Paris.
Musée Jacquemart-André: History
As it has been stated above, it all started with a person named Edouard André. Born into a wealthy banking family, André was a fan of artworks and fortunately, he had the money to actually form a collection. After his collection got many, he felt confident enough to exhibit them in his new mansion. This mansion was built by architect Henri Parent and took 9 years to build from 1869 to 1875.
When he married Jaquemart, he found his soul mate in hunting art work pieces. Together, they would travel to Italy to buy works of art, resulting in their massive and best Italian artwork collection in all France. After Edouard André’s death, Jaquemart continued to search for works of art from the orient to add to the collection. Finally, in 1912 she bequeathed her mansion and all of the art collection inside to the Insitute de France to fulfill her promise to her late-husband. Musée Jacquemart-André was firstly opened to the public one year later in 1913.
Musée Jacquemart-André Today
Musée Jacquemart-André is divided into five parts or apartments.
1. The State Apartments
The collection displayed in this room is the 18 century French paintings. Prior to being a museum, André designed this room to receive his formal guests.
2. The Informal Apartments
This room is where André received his more informal guests such as business relations. Now, this room is decorated with a good style which reminds visitors how good the artistic taste of its passed owner.
3. The Winter Garden
Henri Parent and Charles Garnier are two people who deserve all the praise for the remarkable artistic in the Winter Garden room.
4. The Italian Museum
This room houses the works of Luca Della Robbia, Francesco Laurana, Donatello, and other prominent Italian artists. There is one part of this room called the Florentine Gallery which presents religious themes and Florentine school works from Botticini, Botticelli, Ucello, and Perugino.
There is also another part called Venetian Gallery which is dedicated for the 15th century Venetian artists in a Venetian Palazzo setting to house paintings by Bellini, Carpaccio, and Mantegna.
5. The Private Appartments
These private apartments are located on ground floor. These rooms are the rooms that will give you the feeling as if the museum building is still André and Jaquemart’s family house.

Visiting Musée Jacquemart-André
The museum’s complete address is at 158 bd Haussman, 75008, Paris. To reach Musée Jacquemart-André, you can take Metro line 9 and 13 and stopat Saint-Agustin, Miromesnil, or Saint-Philippe du Roule station. If you use RER, take line A to Charles de Gaulle-Etoile station.
Bus will offer you more chances since there are nine lines you can take. They are line Lines 22, 43, 52, 54, 28, 80, 83, 84, 93. The museum is surrounded by other tourist attractions such as Place de l’Etoille, Champs-Elysées, and some department stores.
The museum is open daily at 10 am to 6 pm. On Monday and Saturday, the museum will open its gate longer until 9 pm.
